  3. CD2HD version 1.1

  5. This is the instruction file for CD2HD.exe, a utility I wrote in Visual Basic in 3 short
  6. nights.  CD2HD lets you convert most other BBS description files to a description 
  7. listing that is useable with PowerBBS for Windows and PowerBBS's File List Manager.
  8.  
  9. My only compulsion to write this was to move shareware files from cd-rom to my large
  10. hard drive, and to move the descriptions with them.  This way, I wouldn't have to 
  11. dedicate my wonderful cd-rom drive to a stupid doorway program and a bunch of runny- 
  12. nose file leeches.
  13.  
  14. Be forewarned:  I cannot be held responsible for anything this program may do to your
  15. computer, your software, and your life.  PLEASE read this text before running CD2HD.exe.
  16. It can create lots of unnecessary work for you if used wrong.

  18. To use this program:  
  19.  
  20. 1.  Run this program by using the File/Run menu selection of the Program Manager(or any
  21.     of the other myriad ways you can run a program in windows.)
  22.  
  23. 2.  Use the DriveBox and Directory Box on the left side of the window to select a source
  24.     drive and directory.  This is where the one of the following description files 
  25.     should be located(the program complains if there isn't one of them in there when you
  26.     click the start button.):

  28.                Files.BBS       Descript.ion      Wildcat.Txt      00_index.txt
  29.  
  30. 3.  Use the DriveBox and Directory Box on the right side of the window to select a 
  31.     destination drive/directory for the output file.
  32.  
  33. Note:  This program uses the filename of "PBBSLIST.BBS" for the output file.  If this
  34.     file exists already in the destination directory, the descriptions will be appended
  35.     to this file.

  37. 4.  If you want to move the listed files from the source directory to the destination
  38.     directory, check the "Copy Files" box.  This program will replace any duplicate
  39.     files in the destination dir.

  41. WARNING:  I have never run out of HD space while using this program so I cannot predict
  42.     the resulting error of such a situation.  Please tell me your story if this happens
  43.     to you.  :)

  45.     You can cancel any operation at any time by Clicking the Cancel button or the Exit
  46.     Button.

  48. 5.  Click the Start button and pray you have enough HD space.  :D
  49.  
  50. 6.  Now, all you have to do is edit the File Listing Setup in the Forum Setup in Config 
  51.     for PowerBBS.  For the File Listing Path/File, type in the path and filename for the 
  52.     PBBSLIST.BBS listing file.  For the Dir Containing Files, make that the path for the
  53.     destination (if you copied the files), or the source directory(if you didn't copy the 
  54.     files.)

  56. 7.  Voila!  Instant upload of all CD-ROM files to the bbs, without major typing!!!

  63.     Bugs I found in the 1.0 release:
  64.  
  65. 1.  The fields in the different listings for other bbs's were formatted all differently,
  66.     and I had only written one routine to read the Wildcat.txt format.  If the program
  67.     didn't find a Wildcat.txt file, then it went to one of the others, but used the way
  68.     wildcat.txt's fields were formatted to read the filenames, descriptions, etc.

  70.     I added a separate routine for each separate source description file type, so the 
  71.     result file would not be garbled.

  73. 2.  Cleaned up the interface.  (Not a bug, just wanted it to look better.)

  75. 3.  Made the program insert question marks ("?") into the size and date fields on files
  76.     it couldn't find in the source directory.

  78. 4.  Some other things I forgot to write down for this report, but, hmmm, I think I got 'em
  79.     all...

  84.    Possibilities for future versions:
  85.  
  86. 1.  Specify your CD rom drive letter, and the program will scan the entire CD rom and create
  87.     a full Listing of all files, with size, date, and description.
  88.  
  89. 2.  Allow user to specify which type of source listing file to use.
  90.  
  91. 3.  Specify the cd drive letter, the destination drive letter/path, and do a full copy of all
  92.     directories and files to the hard drive.  Then, scan and create lists, and then create a
  93.     "Files Listing Data File"  which you could specify in the Forum Setup Screen entry, and 
  94.     in one stroke make the whole CD Rom available for download from your (massive) hard drive.

  96. 4.  (or, an alternative to #3) Do the same, but don't copy the files, and create lists and 
  97.     listing.dat, for running from the CD-Rom.
  98.  
  99. 5.  Allow the user to name the output file.
